Groot Constantia Wine Estate, the oldest wine estate in South Africa is a national monument and situated on the Cape Peninsula overlooking False Bay, only 15 minutes from Cape Towns City Centre.
It was developed by Simon van der Stel in 1685. Today, Groot Constantia is a museum, which exhibits a great insight into the social life of the first Cape settlers. |
The vineyards are tucked in the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The area is blessed with a maritime climate due to the oceans on both sides and an annual average rainfall of ± 1,100 mm per annum.
This, combined with cool southern slopes and deep mountain soil provides the ideal setting for the making of top quality wines. |
