Umdloti gets its name from the Mdloti
River, which was named after a wild tobacco growing that grew on the riverbanks.
Umdloti is a coastal town situated between two rivers namely the Ohlanaga
and Mdloti.
Umdloti has a wide stretch of beach
including a tidal pool enclosed by rocks and a lagoon at the river mouth.
From a tourist perspective Umdloti
is a very popular coastal town to visit, virtually all the properties have
panoramic sea views, which includes whale and dolphin viewing.
There are many activities in and
around Umdloti these include horse riding, scuba diving, fishing, kite
surfing, dolphin and whale watching trips and micro lighting along the
coast.
Umdloti is accessible to Durban
and the surrounding areas. It is a half hour drive to the airport (Durban
International), twenty minutes to the city centre and a two hour drive
from The St. Lucia Wetland Park and Big Five country.
