Tzaneen
- A place of scenic abundance
| Of all Africa's scenic abundances,
it is in the sweep of the savannah country - or lowveld - that the true
sprit is found. Here, under a peerless African sun, is a limitless, living
landscape to which wild game must be bound if they are to survive; and
Mankind, too, has come to appreciate this in its endeavour to prosper. |
 |
Where the North-eastern Escarpment
of South Africa veers down from the mist-blown heights of the Woodbush
lies Tzaneen (approx. 120 km west of the Northern part of the Kruger National
Park). Choicest entranceway to the lowveld since 1919, though long,
long before that Stone Age people found the place to their liking. Today,
the population is an amalgam of farmers, ranchers, miners, industrialists
and business people, plus, of course tribes with famed backgrounds.
Tzaneen is the key to unlocking the
rhythms and landscapes of the lowveld, and, indeed, a place also to unlock
yourself, for here nature is so fundamental we begin to cast off some of
that grinding, disquieting obsession with ourselves. |
| No-one really knows the origin of
the name Tzaneen, though the most authentic and accepted seems to be that
it has a very old tribal derivation and means “gathering place “ and “happy
land”. Indeed it remains both here in a fertile valley fed by the Letaba
river, is the gathering place of an agricultural area producing an abundance
of crops; sub-tropical fruits like avocados, paw paws, mangoes, bananas,
litchis, passion fruit and, of course, citrus fruit, plus tomatoes, vegetables,
flowers, nuts, tea, potatoes and timber.
The cornucopia has been achieved,
over the years, by man pressing ahead disease and set-backs as if against
physical barriers. Here you will find no weary excess of degeneration. |
