St.
Francis Bay - Coastal Haven
 |
The picturesque village of St. Francis
Bay nestles in a fold of the green clad dunes lining the beautiful bay
of St. Francis. It was first sighted in 1575 and named after the Patron
Saint of Sailors, St. Francis.
The Kromme River, navigable for over
10 km upstream, winds its serene way past the village to the sea, where
gulls wheel and call overhead as dolphins and whales play in the shoreline
shallows - a paradise for fishermen, boaters, canoeists, surfers, wind
surfers and marine creatures that shelter in the waters. |
| The white walls and thatched roofs
of gracious buildings are reflected in the tranquil waters of the canals.
Only 1 hour from the city of Port
Elizabeth, the climate is temperate with warm summers and mild winters.
The magnificent beach extends for 3 km, a place to soak up the sun, swim,
seek the "perfect wave" and most important of all - relax. |
 |
 |
Nature lovers can loose themselves
in the beauty of the area, on hiking and biking trails through the unspoiled
nature reserve, spotting gentle animals in their natural surroundings.
Bird life is abundant, with over 200 recorded species in the Bay.
Both traditional and modern restaurants
beside smart shops overlook the working harbour of Port St. Francis, thronged
with the boats of the calamari fishermen unloading their catches, and the
adjoining marina with its pleasure craft and ocean going yachts.
Tuscan style houses, red tiled, with
arches and earth coloured walls, add a touch of Mediterranean colour to
this part of the village. |
| Near the village is the rustic fishing
village of Cape St. Francis, with its beautiful beach, nature trail and
historic lighthouse. Walking trails, linking Cape St. Francis with St.
Francis Bay, wind among the rocks.
With an excellent 18 hole golf course,
bowling greens and tennis courts for sports lovers, St. Francis Bay is
an enchanting beginning or end of the famous Garden Route. Addo Elephant
Park, Tsitsikamma Forest and the Bavianskloof Mountains are among the easily
accessible attractions for visitors.
A perfect venue for the holiday of
a lifetime.
