Stellenbosch
- Town of oaks
 |
Stellenbosch,
the oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town, is undoubtedly one of
the most scenic and historically preserved towns in South Africa.
In 1679 the newly appointed governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, discovered
a fertile, green valley. He decided to establish a settlement here
and named it after himself – Stellenbosch meaning Stel's bush.
Oak-lined streets
next to water furrows compliment the many fine examples of elegant Cape
Dutch, Victorian and Georgian architecture – all part of the unique "Town
of Oaks".
How can a visitor
to Stellenbosch set about getting to know the village and its atmosphere?
For a start: Park your own car somewhere, put on your walking shoes
and go out to meet the village on foot – you will get to know it much better
that way than any motorist, no matter how slowly he may cruise about in
his car. |
| Dorp Street,
the oldest residential street still in more or less its original state
in South Africa, is lined by houses facing directly onto the sidewalk.
These attached rows of houses with parallel irrigation canals, the shadow
patterned white walls, the oak trees and the individual character of each
house create the beautiful street images for which Stellenbosch is renown.
There is loads to see and to enjoy: Culture, music, art galleries,
cafés, small restaurants and open markets – „People are living here“. |
| Stellenbosch
is the capital of the winelands!
Perhaps the
most enjoyable way of exploring this region is via various wine routes
– wine tasting and sightseeing itineraries inspired by and modelled on
the successful "Weinstraße" of Germany and France's "Route de vin"-
Most of the wine farms of the Stellenbosch area are within 20 kilometres
from the city centre and cover an area of approximately 15.000 hectare.
As you can imagine, Stellenbosch has much to offer the wine lover!
The University
of Stellenbosch, the largest landowner in the town and known affectionately
as "Maties", had its inception as the Stellenbosch gymnasium in 1866 and
in 1918 became the University of Stellenbosch – it developed as a university
with a unique character of which not only the town, but also the entire
South African cultural community can be proud of. |

| Relax and
enjoy the "Town of Oaks"– enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the good food
and the good wine. People are living here! |
