Route 62
- Road to opportunity
 |
This is an invitation for an inspection
visit to Montagu on the often forgotten superb scenic "Route 62" between
Oudtshoorn and Cape Town.
Evelyn Holtzhausen wrote in an article
in the Argus on the 27th of February 1999: "Tourists are being denied
the opportunity of seeing some of the most beautiful scenery in the south-east
of the Western Cape because of bureaucratic apathy".
Her reason for making this statement
is that the road signs in Oudtshoorn only refer to this road as "Calitzdorp
52km". Very few tourists would realize that this "Route 62" leads
to Cape Town and Wine Routes as far as Worcester. |
| Champion Port and Muscadel wines
are produced in Calitzdorp - Bo Plaas and Uitvlught winery in Montagu.
Every small village enroute has its own wine cellar and offers wine tasting. |
| Like "Route 66" in the USA, "Route
62" connects the rural and urban communities along its course. "Get
your kicks on Route 66" became a catch phrase for countless motorists who
moved back and forth between Chicago and Los Angeles, since 1926 when the
road was designated. General Dwight D Eisenhower returned from Germany
impressed by the strategic value of the Autobahn where one can drive with
speed and safety. By 1970, nearly all segments on original "Route
66" were replaced by a modern four-lane highway.
"Route 62" also lost its glory when
the N2 became the "fast" route between Cape Town and the Garden Route,
but in contrast to "Route 66", "Route 62" is very much alive and ready
to be explored.
"Route 62" provides the tourist with
a variety of scenery like mountain passes, fruit farms, wine orchards and
even Ronnies Sex Shop. On your drive down be sure to watch out for
some of the Karoo's wild animal kingdom. The roadsides is also blessed
with some of the most wonderful indigenous plants. |
 |
| Small untouched villages and a mission
station borders the road and gives the feel of the Klein Karoo/Breede River
region. These villages in their preserved state are only waiting
for tourists to start using "Route 62" to realise their full potential
again. Like Route 66 it symbolizes the "Road to opportunity".
160 km from Cape Town, and 240 km
from Oudtshoorn lies the village of Montagu nestled at the foot of the
Langeberg Mountains. Its main attraction is hiking in the mountains
on trails varying in length from 2.5km to 16.5km. On one farm there
is a specially adapted tractor to take passengers to the summit of the
Langeberg range, a breathtaking experience. The natural hot water
springs 3km outside the village offer a relaxing outing for an hour or
two. The wine route between Bonnievale and Robertson is one of the
most spectacular trips following the flow of the Breede River. On
some farms wines are tasted while afloat on the river. |
