Port
Alfred - Heart of the Sunshine Coast
 |
The Sunshine Coast, encountered
along Route 72, stretches from Alexandria through a number of unique small
towns each offering something different to travellers of all ages.
Truly deserving of its name, this
coastline boasts hundreds of hectares of pristine beaches that bask in
the highest number of sunshine hours on the South African coastline. The
Sunshine coast displays a lush valley bushveld region of more than a million
hectares of malaria free game and bird viewing. |
| It is not just the beaches and game
reserves that make up the Sunshine Coast – enjoy the plentiful entertainment,
history, culture and outdoor adventures. The area also supports world class
golf courses, every kind of water sport imaginable, fishing, hiking, 4x4
trails, beach horse ride, arts and crafts. |
| At the heart of the Sunshine Coast
lies Port Alfred. This thriving seaside resort is situated midway between
the cities of East London and Port Elizabeth on the banks of the Kowie
River.
Port Alfred is a residential town
and one of the country's top holiday destinations. With its unique setting,
pleasant climate and wealth of activities, it is not surprising that a
South African outdoor magazine named Port Alfred "The best seaside resort
in Southern Africa" in 2001. |
 |
| This 1829 historical settler's town
is a favourite holiday spot with its golden beaches that stretch forever,
and the wide Kowie River, navigable for 29 km past riverside homes, farmlands
and indigenous forest. The river, sea and beaches provide for a wide choice
of water sports, which include surfing, canoeing, water-skiing, scuba diving
and fishing. There is a 250 berth small boat harbour with a launching ramp
for all size crafts.
For those who prefer other sports,
the prestigious golf club offers an 18 hole golf course with spectacular
sea views. As Port Alfred is set in historic settler country, there is
plenty of exploring to be done. A variety of hikes and trails, including
the famous 2 day Kowie canoe trail is available. |
 |
Nature reserves offer game drives,
hiking trails, and the malaria free game parks of the Eastern Cape, offer
excellent game viewing, including the big five (lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino and buffalo), and are within a hour's drive from Port Alfred.
Nearby is the charming historical
village of Bathurst, the eastern province's own "English Village". Bathurst
is small but full of interest – it has national monuments, a mill, a village
pub, churches, a hotel (the oldest inn in South Africa) and the home to
the Big Pineapple.
Renowned for its unspoiled natural
beauty, the Sunshine Coast will leave a lasting impression on visitors. |
