Ixopo - A small farming village

Ixopo, a small farming village one and a half hours drive from Durban, is situated midway between the coast and the Drakensberg at an altitude of 1000 m above sea level.  Surrounded by rolling green hills, valleys and streams, it has become an area known for its productive dairy farms as well as timber plantations.  In fact the name Ixopo is the Zulu name for the marshy stream (eXopo) which runs alongside the village and is derived from the sucking noise made by the hoovers of cattle withdrawn from the mud as they were chased home in the evenings.

The area is bordered by two mighty rivers, the Mkomazi or "Gatherer of Waters" and Mzimkulu or "Great One".  Their courses follow different paths, both wild, adventurous and always picturesque.  In places they snake lazily along deep sheltered valleys, then suddenly drop into an unforgettable cascade as the waters tumble down rock faces spewing mist into the air.  It is here that those seeking a bit of action can join in with an exciting wild water rafting trip.

Closer to Ixopo is an area named "Carisbrooke" made famous by the wellknown author, Alan Paton, in his book "Cry the Beloved Country".  Alan came to Ixopo to teach at the local High School and ended up marrying Dorrie, a daughter of a local businessman.  Tours of his home, the school as well as a trip on a narrow gauge train that takes you down to visit the Carisbrooke school situated in the valley which he spoke of so eloquently in his book.  Locally made traditional crafts may be purchased here as well as a show of "gumboot dancing" enjoyed.

Accommodation ranges from the rustic to the luxurious with a number of interesting places to visit such as art studios and the St. Isidore Mill Museum built by the German Trappist Monks over 100 years ago.

Activities in the area include golf, tennis, hiking and fishing.  Ixopo and surrounds is also excellent for birdwatching and is the home of two very endangered species, namely the Bus Swallow and the Cape Parrot.
