Kwena
Basin - Heart of Mpumalanga
 |
The Kwena Basin, a unique valley,
provides a range of accommodation and adventure activities. The climate
is temperate lending itself to a variety of outdoor recreational activities
to suit all age groups.
The historian will find a wealth
of well preserved stone ruins which archaeologists have identified as dwellings
dating back to the early Stone Age. The Kwena Basin is steeped in history
from ancient times up to the Anglo Boer War. Specialists have identified
areas where "rainmakers" and their people lived. |
| Traces of terraced mountainsides
together with milling stones indicate that agriculture was practised here
as early as 700 A.D. The Anglo Boer War was very active in the area and
sites, which have been documented are open to visitors.
The Kwena Basin lies within the Kwena
Basin Conservancy and is a unique area of South Africa where trout breed
naturally in the waters. Fishing in the nearby pristine Crocodile River,
is available and the annual Kwena Basin Fly Fishing Challenge is held on
these superb waters.
Conventional angling in the Kwena
Dam might very easily yield yellowfish, carp, bass, barbel and tellapia.
Fly fishing for yellow fish has become very popular. |
 |
| Be sure to look for a large variety
of indigenous trees, wildlife, insects and reptiles. A large range of natural
fauna such as Leopard, Caracal, African Wildcat, Kudu, Bushbuck, mountain
Reedbuck, Duiker, Hippo, Cape Clawless Otter, Vervet Monkey and Baboon
are regular visitors to the area. The abundant bird life is extensive and
boasts of breeding grounds for the endangered bald-headed Ibis, Black Eagle,
Fish Eagle and Osprey.
Adventure activities abound in the
Kwena Basin and you may choose to participate in any of the following:
4 x 4 training and trails, paragliding and tandems, archery, horse riding,
mountain climbing, abseiling and remember to bring your mountain bike for
a special experience in the Sappi forests. Vintage train rides from Waterval
Boven to Waterval Onder occur on the last Sunday of each month.
Various tourist attractions in Mpumalanga
are easily accessible from the Kwena Basin and provide a most interesting
day excursion. These include: Sudwala Caves, Pilgrims Rest, Gods Window,
Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Pot Holes, and numerous waterfalls.
