The Northern
Cape - the land of contrasts
 |
The Northern
Cape, South Africa’s largest province, is home to only 1,8% of the total
population, and Kimberley the Diamond City, is the Capital.
It is largely
a semi desert area with minimum rainfall and warm temperatures all year
round. A place of space and silence, and barren land bears South Africa’s
largest river, the Orange, which provides the basis for a healthy agriculture. |
| With a natural
kaleidoscope of contrasts, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on everything
from the white sands of the Diamond Coast to the harsh Richtersveld mountain
desert; the Namaqualand floral canvass to the vast plains of the Bushmanland;
the Karoo with its shrubby plains and rocky outcrops to the lush green
Orange River Valley; the Kalahari Bushveld to the red sand dunes of the
southern Kalahari. And with 6 National Parks to choose from, you’ll also
be able to encounter some of the Northern Cape’s greastest species. The
Northern Cape is also a malaria free area. |

| Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park (former Kalahari Gemsbok Park) - One of Africa’s last
wilderness areas, is also one of its largest relatively undisturbed arid
savannas. The lack of surface water, for most of the year, has contributed
to minimal human impact and the preservation of the area. Besides the presence
of antelope and predators, the park is well-known for bird life, including
20 species of larger raptors.
Augrabies Falls
National Park - At this desert park the Orange River plummets 56 m into
a pool walled by sheer granite. It is the sixth biggest waterfall in the
world, when the Orange River is in flood.
This arid piece
of lunar-like land is essentially a scenic park, with awesome viewpoints,
and game and birds can be seen too. |
 |
| Richtersveld
National Park - This mountain desert park is a harsh and unpredictable
land, where water is scarce and life-sustaining moisture comes in the form
of early morning fog, which rolls in from the cold Atlantic Ocean. A staggering
assortment of plant life and many endemic plant species, such as the “halfmens”,
is to be found here.
Namaqua National
Park - Best known for its beautiful showcase of the Namaqualand wild flower
season.
Vaalbos National
Park - 70 kilometres from Kimberley with a variety of birds and mammals
including the black rhino, white rhino and buffalo.
Tankwa Karoo
National Park - A conservation area of typical Southern Karoo habitat. |
