Fouriesburg and its spectacular scenery
Fouriesburg is a small farming community, founded in 1892, and named after a local farmer - Christoffel Fourie.

The town is situated in the beautiful Eastern Free State Highlands of South Africa, and surrounded by magnificent views of mountains and colourful sandstone cliffs.

Activities available are 4x4 and hiking trails, horse riding, trout fishing, abseiling, amongst others, and visits to asparagus and cherry farms in season.

Accommodation for visitors comprises a choice of Bed & Breakfast, full board, self-contained cottages, camping and caravan sites.

Overlooking the majestic Maluti Mountains, Fouriesburg is an ideal gateway to explore the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Katse Dam and the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme, the ski slopes in the South African winter, dinosaur footprints and other historical sites as well as various arts & crafts centres are all easily accessible via Caledonspoort border post, 9 kilometres from Fouriesburg.

The town was a stronghold of the Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War and briefly the site of President Steyn's provisional government.  Nearby (about 15 kilometres from Fouriesburg) is Surrender Hill, which is a memorial to fallen British soldiers and Boers.  Four thousand Boers surrendered here and most were sent to India as prisoners of war.
