Ficksburg
- Discover your soul
 |
“When I
am here I feel that nothing can shut me in, that my thoughts can roam as
far as the horizons” Nelson Mandela, on
the Free State.
Situated in
the scenic panorama of the Eastern Free State, Ficksburg nestles at the
foot of the Imperani Mountain and on the banks of the Caledon River, the
border with Lesotho. The magnificent views of the majestic Malutis, Ficksburg's
backdrop, changes with the seasons, from the purple haze of summer to the
snow clad slopes of winter. |
| The district
is renowned for the breathtaking sandstone formations of the mountains
and many of the historic buildings in and around the town are built of
sandstone. Ficksburg is at the heart of the cherry growing district and
the annual November Cherry Festival is the oldest crop festival in South
Africa. The area is also famous for growing asparagus.
The Ficksburg
area is a wonderful holiday destination, not just for its stunning beauty
but for the range of sports and activities available. There are hikes for
all types of walker, horse riding, polo, steam trains, bird watching, game
viewing, boating and much else besides. Trips across the border to see
the Katse dam are easily arranged. |
