Dinokeng is a word in the languages of the baTswana and baPedi people who live in the area, which means "a place of rivers".  In African culture, rivers are respected as a source of human well being, and the waters of many rivers are believed to have healing powers.  Nokeng tsa Taemane means ‘river of diamonds’. 

Over many centuries various people have been attracted to the land along the rivers of Dinokeng, bringing with them the influences of their different cultures.  The rich diversity of natural habitats of the bushveld and grassland terrain of Dinokeng provides a suitable setting and a natural home for a variety of wild animals, including the legendary African Big Five - the elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros.

Thousands of international tourists visit Gauteng Province annually.  Many visitors do not get to experience the Big Five in their wild habitat because of their busy schedules, the distance from international airports to reserves or, simply, the costs.  The Dinokeng Area gives an opportunity for many more visitors to experience the country's rich wild life experience as well as its rich natural and cultural diversity.
