Bethlehem
 |
Bethlehem is situated on the N5
route between Bloemfontein and Durban, and is the principle town of the
Eastern Free State. Its Biblical name means “House of Bread”.
Today the town is an interesting
mix of old and new. The early settlers hewed the warm coloured local
sandstone to create a proud legacy of fine buildings, many of which are
proclaimed monuments.
Mealtimes are a treat with a choice
of excellent restaurants and coffee shops. Accommodation includes
hotels and bungalows at a holiday resort and guesthouses both in town and
on nearby farms. |
| There is also a game reserve, only
17 kilometers outside of Bethlehem, a must for every nature lover, with four of
the “Big Five” and the “White Lion Breeding project”. In another game reserve
on the outskirts of town an abundance of wildlife grazes on the rolling
hills and under the shading pine threes.
Excellent 18 hole golf course in
town and annual Wheat Festival to name a few of the action around the year.
Easy day trips from Bethlehem to
the nearby Maluti and Witteberge mountain regions, including the world-famous
Golden Gate Park. |
