Barberton
- Gem of the Lowveld
 |
Nestled in the foothills of the
Drakensberg range, the Makhonjwa Mountains, lies Barberton, scene of the
last wild gold rush to the Eastern Transvaal in 1884. |
| This scenic southern Lowveld town
today still boasts many remnants of the digger's days, and visitors can
explore the Barberton Museum, visit Belhaven and Stopforth Museum houses,
browse at the Umjindi Jewellery Project, an LED initiative, which also
has an arts and crafts centre and coffee shop.
Linked to the project through the
supply of 3,8 million year old gold, is African Pioneer Mining which offers
the more daring visitor underground tours through a century old gold mine
and teaches people how to pan for gold - you keep what you find! |

A Heritage Walk combines most of
our national monuments and historical places of interest such as the De
Kaap Stock Exchange façade (first SA gold stock exchange) a 1901
Blockhouse, and the statue of Percy Fitzpatrick’s famous dog, Jock of the
Bushveld.
The geology of the area is some 3½
billion years old, and is manifested in the beautiful mountains surrounding
the De Kaap Valley where the town lies. Hiking and walking trails, 4x4
routes (own vehicle or with operator), horse riding, mountain biking, quad
bikes, micro lighting and paragliding are underpinned by an excellent and
affordable hospitality industry. |
Combine this with our Lowveld climate,
proximity to Swaziland, the Kruger National Park and the delights of the
eastern Mpumalanga Lowveld, and come and experience Barberton.
