The Great North West Region is an arid savannah region of undulating grass and thornveld dunes offering a unique wilderness experience to the nature enthusiast. Birds that can be seen includes the tawny and martial eagles, bataleur and lappet-faced vulture.

Agriculture and Vryburg

The Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve near Vryburg offers a true hiking experience and is home to a variety of wildlife.

The town of Vryburg is situated on the main railway lines from Cape Town to Botswana and Zimbabwe. Vryburg is commonly known as the Texas of South Africa, because of the large concentration of cattle that are found in the area. One of the largest cattle sales in the Southern Hemisphere is hosted by Vryburg every year.

It also hosts South Africa's third largest agricultural show and a series of events dedicated to outdoor activities in the scenic, rugged area surrounding the town.

The Molopo Nature Reserve is famous for its raptor breeding and also offers excellent hunting packages. There are no large predators, so Molopo is safe to explore on foot.

The fossilised Phepane riverbed in the reserve is many millions of years old and once carried huge volumes of water. Nowadays it's a place for seeing herds of eland.

Overlanding and Potjiekos

Schweizer-Reneke has San Bushman rock paintings thought to be over 20 000 years old.

Massoukop still has the remains of the Koranna Bushman tribal kraal.

The town of Stella is widely known as host of the annual Cattle Festival in October.

The roughness of the region makes it excellent for overlanding, hiking and camping. Locals are friendly and will more than likely invite visitors to their homes to enjoy some traditional South African cuisine like potjiekos, a stew made on an open fire.
