Green Kalahari
Vast tracts of bleak, shimmering semi desert contrast dramatically with lush green vineyards filling the Orange River’s fertile valleys… This is the Green Kalahari!

The mighty Orange River meanders through a giant valley to plummet down 56 meter in a series of granite cataracts.

Today, you can travel peacefully from wine cellars to tearooms in the desert or the Augrabies Falls and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will satisfy your hunger for wildlife.

.
Home of the Kokerboom and Klipspringer, the Khoi people called it "The place of Great Noise", the Augrabies Falls National Park stretches 28 000 hectares on both sides of the Orange River.

Ruled by silence and serenity, many animal species call this park home.

This harsh landscape has forced the Nama people that inhabit the area to adapt their lifestyles to survive.

Mammal viewing
Africa’s first official transborder conservation area, the Kgalagadi National Park crosses the South African border into Botswana and covers an impressive 38 000 sq km.

The southern Kalahari represents an increasingly rare phenomenon: a large ecosystem relatively free from human interference. And it is this that gives the park its appeal!

Because of the sparse vegetation and concentration of animals in the dry riverbeds of the Auob and Nossob Rivers, Kgalagadi offers premium mammal viewing.

.

Upington is situated on the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape.

Surrounded by bright green irrigated vineyards, this area is known as the Green Kalahari.

It is its location on the main road to Namibia which makes it a popular stop over for tourists visiting the Augrabies Falls and Namibia.

Keimoes and a waterwheel

Kakamas is graced with 11 Egyptian-style working water wheels, very old hand-built irrigating tunnels, vineyards, lucerne and cotton fields.

It is a convenient stopover spot en route to the Augrabies Falls, the Richterveld National Park and the Fish River Canyon.

Keimoes is an attractive little village in the green Orange River Valley. The Tierberg Nature Garden is noted for its prodigious numbers of aloes and panoramic views of the Keimoes Valley.
