Orange River
In 1866, young Erasmus Jacobs found a shiny pebble on the banks of the Orange River… little did he know his discovery was to lead to the great South African diamond rush.

By 1871, over 50 000, fortune seekers flooded into the Northern Cape and Kimberley was established. Now the largest and most modern city of the province, Kimberley is still teeming with the history of this era.

Today Kimberley is known as "The Diamond Capital of the World".

.

Once a dusty, shanty town full of hopes and dreams, Kimberley has developed around the famous "Big Hole" into a modern city with wide, tree-lined streets, appealing parks and gardens, well known hotels and lively shopping centres.

Once a small hillock known as Colesberg Koppie, the "Big Hole" is now nearly 365 meters deep and covers an area close on 15,5 ha. An observation stand provides a good view for all the tourists this attraction generates.

Diamonds and hunting
Known as "Oasis of the Kalahari", Kuruman is situated on the brim of the Kalahari, on the main road between Gauteng and Namibia/Cape Town via Upington. This route is becoming more and more popular due to the unspoiled scenery and tourism attractions.

This little beautiful green town can be found in the Kuruman Valley surrounded by water, mountains and dense vegetation. It's permanent water source, "Die Oog" delivers 20 million litres of crystal clear water to the 10 000 inhabitants.

Kuruman is establishing itself as one of South Africa's major hunting locations. But, mining and agriculture are what supports this thriving economy.

.
Danielskuil is a small central town that was once inhabited by prehistoric man, because of it fertile ground and abundant underground springs. Evidence of this can be found in the Wonderwerk Cave.

Griqua herdsmen used Danielskuil as a resting place on their journey north to find grazing lands.

The area is rich in minerals and is home to Boesmansgat, the second deepest sinkhole in the world, on the safari farm, Mount Carmel.

Khatu, "the town under the trees", was established due to Iscor’s iron ore mining activity in the Kalahari.
Some of the world's longest ore trains travel through harsh territory to offload their precious cargo at Saldanha Bay.
