Bloemfontein at Night

Bloemfontein, is the capital of the Freestate and the judicial capital of South Africa.

It has become known as the “City of Roses” by the locals due to the peaceful atmosphere and lack of haste and stress, as well as the hospitable attitude of the locals towards tourists.

With more than 260 000 inhabitants, Bloemfontein has an impressive array of entertainment facilities, including public parks, swimming pools, sports fields, street markets, art galleries, theatres, a zoo and a game reserve in the middle of town.

A true blend in which somehow the past, the present and the future have been encapsulated in this city, from the natural inclusion of impressive architecture and historical heritage into the everyday life of a modern developing city.

The flat crest of Naval Hill (192.5 hectares) presents panoramic views of Bloemfontein and is home to the former Lamont Hussey Observatory, which has now been converted into a theatre.

On the eastside of the hill you can see the large white sculpture of a horse which was erected during the Boer War to serve as a land mark for the British cavalry.

This low hill has been occupied by the Franklin Nature Reserve since 1930, the worlds only inner city game reserve, with animal species ranging from giraffes to steenbuck and many indigenous bird species.

Kings Park is a must see, it is ablaze with colour all year round with its 4000 plus roses.

Kings Park also houses the Bloemfontein Zoo, known for its large collection of primates. On the first Saturday of each month the popular “Art in the Park” is held here.

Opposite the zoo is the Loch Logan pleasure grounds, with undercover braai facilities and the Loch Logan Waterfront with shops, restaurants, cinema and permanent flea market.
