Grootfontein Kalkfeld Otjiwarongo .
Waterberg Plateau Area, Namibia

Situated north of Windhoek, the Waterberg Plateau Area is a fascinating region of geological formations and ancient dinosaur footprints.

Glowing gold in late afternoon sun, it looks too tempting to drive past. It is sometimes referred to as the 'Lost Eden' because the animals of this lush tableland have no way down.

The plateau was declared a Nature Reserve in 1972. Endangered species like the Black and White Rhino, Sable Antelope and Blue Wildebeest were introduced here. Adding to the beauty of the rock faces are splashes of brightly coloured lichens, of which there are over 140 species in the Waterberg.

The Herero, who once settled in Otjiwarongo, named it "Place of the Fat Cows", and still today some of the biggest cattle breeding enterprises are situated in the Otjiwarongo area.

Otjiwarongo is home to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, an international organization dedicated to ensuring the long-term survival of the cheetah through research, conservation and education.

Namibia’s only crocodile farm near the eastern border of Otjiwarongo offers visitors to observe and photograph crocodiles at close range.

Hoba meteorite

On the farm Hoba, 24 kilometers from Grootfontein, lies one of the largest meteorites ever found. It weights approximately 60 tons and measures 2.95 by 2.84 meters.

Grootfontein has an old German Schutztruppe fortress from the year 1896 which today houses a museum that expounds on the local history.

Near the tiny town of Kalkfeld, sand stone layers bear the evidence of a 25m-dinosaur stroll, which took place 170 million years ago. The prints were made in what was then soft clay by a three-toed dinosaur that walked on its hind legs.

The Herero tribe is the third-largest group who mainly inhabit central Namibia. They are proud cattle farmers who measure their wealth in cattle.

Sour milk called 'Omaere' forms the basis of the Herero's diet. It is stored in big calabashes and every evening, fresh milk is added. Traditionally the chief first tried it in the mornings and then women and children were allowed to drink from it.

Herero women wear neck to ankle dresses, with heavy petticoats and long sleeves, plus an extraordinarily wide hat.
